Are You Spartan Tough?

As you know I am marathon crazy.  I have not done many other races because I am trying to get to my goal of a marathon in all 50 states.  However, the trend of themed and obstacle running events does get me excited.  I participated in an obstacle race a few years ago and had a blast.  It was like getting to be a kid for the day.  Plus, the kids thought mom playing in the mud was pretty cool.

The End of The World

IMG_1381

I have not yet finished blogging my different marathons.  I need to get on it since I have another one coming up next week.  I love when I get comments and emails from you saying that the posts have helped you decide which runs to do.  I just love hearing from you all.

I have now done 13 marathons and I know I say that each were my favorite, but this one was really unique.  On December 21, 2012 I did, “The End of The World Marathon” and then the following day I did, “The Day After The End of The World Marathon.”  The races took place in Humble, Tx.  There was not much that was special about the location.  It was basically a plowed field with course markers. But what made it awesome was the husband and wife team that put it together.  They were amazing.  I would do any race this couple put on.  Here are a few of the course markers that were put out.

Not too many places do you get to run by where they are drilling for oil.

Most runners will admit that we are in it for the bling.  This race not only had the bling but it had great swag.  For each day we got a duffle bag, a shirt, a hat, a medal and a squeeze toy.  The toy is just something this group likes to do.  One was a Easter Island head and the other was a smiley face.

A Runners Christmas List Part 2

My Runners Christmas list seemed to be a hit with most of you and since I thought of a few more things I thought I would do a part 2.

The Foam Roller

This is a injury preventer and life saver.  Many runners, especially woman, have experienced pain in the IT band.  This roller helps to work out that pain as well as help other areas.  You basically use your body weight and roll over the roller to help break up the lactic acid that builds up.  Exercises usually come with the roller plus you can find them online.

You can purchase the foam roller at just about any running store or online.

Yankz make a great stocking stuffer.  You replace your shoe laces with them to be able to slip your shoe on.  I like them because my shoe is always tied the same way.  There are also great for triathlons when you need to get your shoes on in a hurry.  Again, these can be found at any running store or online.

CWX tights.  These can be pricey but are worth every dollar.  They are compression tights that can be purchased in several lengths.  They add pressure to the most commonly injured parts of your legs to prevent injury.  I use to struggle with IT band issues but after having these tights most of that has gone away.  Plus you feel really thin when you where them.

You can purchase these in any running store, amazon or www.cw-x.com

So I just learned about this one.  I know this is gross but most runners don’t have the best feet since they are often sweaty in running shoes which can lead to fungus and nails falling off.  I know, not encouraging.  But I went to a podiatrist and she had this product that looks great.  It is a nail polish that helps to prevent the growth of fungus.  The brand is Dr’s Remedy.  They can be found at http://www.remedynails.com/

And runners like to be pampered too so a gift card for a pedicure or massage is always a welcome gift.  However, it is good to make sure that the nail tech knows you are a runner so she does not remove all calluses and for the massage therapist to be a sports massage therapist.

I hope you like the second list just as much as the first.

A Runners Christmas List

Every year I am asked by several people what to get the runner in their life.  So this year I am going to be a step ahead of you and make the list before you ask.  Here are some of my favorite all time, must need running gadgets, clothing and accessories.

#1 Road ID

This is one of the best products for safety reasons.  It has emergency contact info as well as important medical info.  You can also get fun sayings added to the bottom.  These are great if for some reason something happened while you were exercising and could not give your information.  These are also great to get for your kids so if there were an emergency while they are out riding bikes or playing at a park.

#2 Fuel Belt

This is a product I could not run without.  The belt is a lifesaver for carrying you water and sports drinks.  I hate to carry a water bottle so this has been a perfect solution.

#3 Camelbak

For those of you that know distance runners this is a great product.  I love this pack because they can carry up to 100 oz. of water depending on which size you purchase.  This is very helpful on hot summer days to not have to stop and refill.  It also help to keep the water cool.

#4 Socks

Socks make for a great stocking stuffer.  Many runners are very specific as to which sock they like so you may want to find out.  But if you know someone that is new to running trying different brands is a great way to see what works.  Plus I have learned you can never have too many pair.  Do Not go out and get regular socks made of cotton.  Runners and walkers need to have socks made for the sport.  My favorite brand is feetures.

Feetures can be found on various running sites.  I have purchased mine from Amazon and my local running store.  They can also be purchased on zappos.

#5  P90X

P90X has been excellent for my cross training.  It helps to add strength and endurance.  I found that it helped my core tremendously which in turn helps your posture when running.  In distance running a good posture can make or break a run.

#6 MotoActv

I use to own a garmin and I would still highly recommend the garmin brand, but I have fallen in love with my MotoActv.  This is a watch that measures your distance, speed, calories and maps your run.  It is also a MP3 player and will decide what music makes you run faster.  Their are too many features to list.  It is awesome and easy to use.

#7 Running Gloves

In the south I do not need these as often but when I do need them I am so glad to have them.  My favorite are the Brooks running gloves. These are actually gloves that have a cover on the thumb you can pull back so you can work your phone etc.  They also have the yellow “wind breaker” cover that pulls over.

#8 Running Jacket

This is also a Brooks product.  This is an extrememly light weigh jacket that can keep you warm.  It is amazing that something so thin can help so much.  It is bright yellow for safety reasons, it helps to keep light rain off you and the wind.  Best off all is that when you get hot this jacket folds up into itself and zips shut smaller than a wallet so it is easy to still carry while running.

#9 Shakeology

This is such a great product for fuel.  I have a shake before I go on my run for breakfast since it is not too heavy.  I will also use it as an after run recovery drink.  Shakeology contains over 70 ingredients including many superfoods.

#10 Compression Sock

These are fantastic for recovery.  I will also where them at times while I run.  These are getting very popular and come in a variety of colors and designs.  Hint Hint to whoever might be purchasing my Christmas gifts.  I really like the ones in the picture.

To find these just google “running compression socks” and you will find a huge variety.
